This summer our town was introduced to something new--a community art project, Painted Barrels Around Town.
Oak barrels were painted by local artists who volunteered their time and talent to create on them a Purcellville or Western Loudoun County theme.
After their initial launch at the grand opening of the Purcellville Farmers Market, the barrels were put on display outside various businesses who had agreed to sponsor them.
In November, they will be auctioned off to raise money for a new community art project next year.
Some of the barrels are only painted on the side that faces passers by. Others are painted all around. Some have elaborately painted tops. One even opens up to display a storage area with wine racks in it.
These are some of my favorites (taken from various angles).
The last few pictures are of colorful and unusual "hands" that caught my attention, and turned out to be signs for an upcoming WLAST (Western Loudoun Artists Studio Tour).
